In what ways has your experience with OPAIR (or Penn State as a whole) contributed to your professional growth and development?
Before joining OPAIR, I wasn’t entirely sure what institutional research encompassed, I just knew I enjoyed working with data. Being part of the unit has really expanded my understanding of how data can be used to support decision-making across the university. It’s helped me grow not just in technical skills, but also in how I approach problem-solving and collaboration. One of the biggest takeaways has been realizing the unique value I bring in translating complex data or models into something meaningful for people who don’t work with data every day. That ability to bridge the gap has become a core part of how I contribute.
What is your approach to collaborating with team members on projects? How do you ensure effective communication and teamwork?
I really believe that the best ideas come from collaboration and hearing different perspectives. The data science and analytics team are always communicating and working together, and I’ve seen firsthand how that leads to stronger outcomes. As I step into this new role, I’m excited to help foster even more collaboration across the three teams, creating more opportunities to share ideas, align efforts, and support each other on projects. Effective communication is key, and I try to lead by example by being open, responsive, and encouraging that same approach across the board.
Can you describe your day-to-day responsibilities as an Assistant Vice Provost for Institutional Research? What does your typical work week look like?
Since this is a new role for me, my typical week is still taking shape. I expect to spend a lot of time meeting with leaders across the university, introducing them to the data resources we offer and learning more about their data needs and goals. These conversations help us make sure our work is aligned with what the university needs. I’ll also be working closely with our three institutional research teams to streamline processes and ensure we’re delivering timely, high-quality information, whether it’s for required reporting, senior leadership, or the broader campus community.
Outside of your work commitments, how do you like to unwind or spend your leisure time?
Outside of work, life is full and fun! I have two young kids, ages 4 and 1½, who definitely keep me on my toes. We also live on a small farm, so there’s always something going on between tending to the animals, managing a large garden, and doing canning and preserving in the summer. We also love to go camping (really, it’s glamping 😊) and explore new places. Fun fact: both of my kids started camping when they were just a few months old!
Since joining the OPAIR team, what are some of the most significant lessons or insights you have gained?
Oh, so much! Coming from an IT background, I didn’t have much exposure to the academic side of higher ed, so joining OPAIR has been a huge learning experience. I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of the academic and student-focused aspects of the university, and how data plays a role in supporting those areas. I’ve also learned how important it is to keep data and dashboards clear and accessible, making sure people can actually use the information to answer their questions. Overall, I’ve really grown in this space, whether it’s understanding higher ed, institutional research, or just getting better at helping people get what they need from the data.
