Daniel Newhart

Assistant Vice Provost for Planning, Policy, and Measurement

Daniel Newhart is the Assistant Vice Provost for Planning, Policy, and Measurement in the Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research (OPAIR).

In this role, he facilitates the development and monitoring of multi-year strategic plans at all levels of Penn State by coordinating strategic planning across the institution, including all of our academic colleges, our Commonwealth Campuses, and our administrative units. He also coordinates and connects unit plans to the work of Penn State’s institutional strategic plan. Daniel has held positions at Purdue University, The Ohio State University, and Oregon State University in student affairs and academic affairs and has more than 20 years of experience in higher education. Most recently, at Oregon State, he was Assistant Vice Provost and Director of Student Affairs Research, Evaluation, and Planning. He also was an Assistant Professor of Practice, where he was faculty in the College Student Services Administration Program, as well as the Graduate Certificate in College and University Teaching Program. At Ohio State, he helped to create the Center for the Study of Student Life. Daniel has published in multiple spaces, such as Research and Practice in Assessment, About Campus, and the Handbook of Institutional Research, and has served in editorial roles in multiple academic journals. He was the founder, in conjunction with the Student Affairs Assessment Leaders, of the Journal of Student Affairs Inquiry.

Daniel earned his bachelor’s degree at Purdue University. He earned his M.A. in Higher Education and Student Affairs and his Ph.D. in Social and Cultural Foundations of Education, both from The Ohio State University. In 2016, Daniel received the New Leader Award from Ohio State’s College of Education and Human Ecology.
